Writer Reflections

Elusive Luck

Some writers get all the luck. The huge advances, the skyrocketing sales numbers, big movie deals. With seemingly no effort, they climb to the top, their lucrative success impossible to ignore.

It’s hard to imagine our favorite writers toiling away like us, getting writer’s block, or being stuck on which word is best to get their meaning across. We only see the results, not the years of work required to attain the success we all seek.

Think of the writer you most admire. They’re someone just like you, a person working hard to get the right words on the page and spending countless hours editing the same errors you find yourself struggling to avoid.

If you could glance behind the curtain, you’d realize success is mainly skill and hard work matched with the will to keep going despite all difficulties. There might be a pinch of luck to getting your work in front of the right people, but that’s a talk for another day.

Keep working toward your goal. You’ll get there as long as you don’t give up. Luck won’t have anything to do with it.
